Maragogi enjoys sunshine and warm weather almost all year round, but your experience can vary a lot depending on the month you choose. Besides the weather, there is one factor many travellers only discover on arrival: the tide. It decides whether your trip to the famous natural pools will be unforgettable or just okay.
What is the weather like in Maragogi throughout the year?
The northern coast of Alagoas has a tropical climate, with high temperatures and warm water in every season. The big difference between months is the amount of rain.
- September to March: the driest, sunniest period. It is also high season, especially between December and Carnival.
- April to July: most of the year's rain falls in these months. It usually comes as showers alternating with sunshine, but there are fully overcast days.
- August: a transition month, with less rain and quieter beaches.
Why are tide tables so important?
Maragogi's natural pools, known locally as galés, sit on coral reefs a few kilometres offshore. Boats only take visitors there at low tide, because that is when the water is calm, shallow and transparent, perfect for floating among the fish.
Each day has different low-tide times, and the height of the tide changes too. In general, the lowest tides occur around the full moon and new moon. Before fixing your travel dates, check the tide table and arrange the trip with local tour operators.
- Low tides in the morning or early afternoon are the most enjoyable.
- At high tide, trips may be cancelled or moved to other spots.
- Plan at least two or three days in Maragogi so you have alternatives if the weather changes.
High and low season: what changes?
In high season (December, January, Carnival and July), the town gets busier, rates go up and tours fill up quickly. Booking your accommodation, tours and transfer in advance is essential.
In low season, beaches are quieter and guesthouses have more availability. With a little flexibility about the rain, you can have a wonderful trip.
What to do in Maragogi besides the natural pools
- Visit beaches such as Antunes, Barra Grande and Burgalhau, with calm water and palm trees.
- Explore neighbouring Japaratinga, even more peaceful.
- Follow the Ecological Route to São Miguel dos Milagres and Porto de Pedras, home to the manatee sanctuary.
- Relax on your hotel's beach, enjoying the warm sea at low tide.
